Milliners

The milliner is a person who makes clothes and hats. The milliner makes alterations, sew garments and sold it to Europe. Hats, belts, gloves, feathers, tasssels, buttons, buckles, and shoes were sometimes made by the milliner. Most people who lived in the country made their own clothes. They didn't need a tailor.

The tailor does a same job as the milliner. A tailor could always find work in big town like Boston. A woman who is a milliner makes bonnets, hoods, and straw hats. They made clothes or thread by a loom. The term jacket (male or female) evolved from the word jack-coat, a tight-fitting man's waistcoat with sleeves. A woman's jacket may be worn with a petticoat as an alternative to the gown.
